“Power Outage at Milano Cortina Olympics Kick-Off”

The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina experienced an early setback as a power outage halted the proceedings just 10 minutes after the games began. The curling matches had already kicked off, but competitors were left waiting when the lights suddenly went out.

Even though the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro was scheduled for Friday, some events had already commenced. The curling competition started with the first round robin matches for mixed doubles, but had to be temporarily paused due to the power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.

During the first end of their match against Norway, officials stopped play with Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds on the ice. Despite the interruption, the British curlers remained in good spirits, with Dodds even finding humor in the situation while officials worked to resolve the issue.

BBC commentator Steve Cram, amused by the incident, commented on the power cut at the stadium, noting the pause in play due to the scoring screens going offline. However, as the lights flickered back on after a brief delay of about five minutes, the crowd cheered, and the competition resumed.

Dodds and Mouat clinched an impressive 8-6 victory to kick off the round robin phase positively, with Mouat playfully downplaying the unexpected disruption. He praised the venue’s atmosphere, ice quality, and joked about the outage, likening it to a dance party experience.

The UK’s medal hopes at the Winter Games are high, with UK Sport aiming for up to eight medals following substantial investments totaling over £32.5 million from the National Lottery and government over the current four-year cycle. This investment reflects the ambition for the UK to excel in winter sports.

Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from the Beijing 2022 Games, has transitioned into a leadership role within Team GB for Milan-Cortina 2026. Expressing confidence in the team’s potential, Muirhead highlighted their ability to challenge established norms despite facing challenges in accessing snow and ice compared to their competitors.
