Misdiagnosed Menopause Symptoms Lead to Cancer Discovery

A mother who attributed her symptoms to menopause or a change in water quality discovered they were actually indicators of a serious illness. Jessica Farrington faced various issues for months, such as night sweats, exhaustion, and weight loss, without fully understanding their significance.

Initially attributing the unusual symptoms to lifestyle modifications or menopause, the 46-year-old recounted experiencing night sweats she associated with perimenopause/menopause due to her age. However, Jessica disregarded the concerns until later when she developed itchy skin, which she initially thought was related to the water quality after moving from Montana to Texas.

Despite attempting solutions like shower head filters and changing detergents, the itching persisted. Jessica also linked her symptoms to menopause while undergoing unexplained weight loss. It wasn’t until discovering a lump in her armpit that she began to consider seeking medical attention, realizing that something might be seriously wrong.

Following a delay in seeking medical help, Jessica finally consulted a doctor in December 2024 after the lump increased in size. Nearly a year after the onset of her symptoms, doctors conducted various tests including hormone levels, mammograms, and ultrasounds due to concerns of breast cancer. Despite normal lab results, a follow-up ultrasound in March 2025 revealed significant changes in her lymph nodes.

A subsequent fine needle biopsy confirmed Jessica had follicular lymphoma, a type of lymphatic system cancer. Commencing a rigorous treatment plan, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Jessica underwent intensive treatment every six weeks for six months. Despite the challenging treatment, Jessica is now in remission and undergoing maintenance therapy to manage the disease.

Reflecting on her journey, Jessica emphasized the transformative impact of her diagnosis on her perspective and priorities. She encourages women to attentively listen to their bodies and promptly seek medical advice when sensing something is amiss. Jessica’s experience has reshaped her outlook on life, focusing on presence, meaning, and connection, and cherishing every moment with loved ones.
