Former Renowned Jockey Arrested for Armed Robbery

A former renowned jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained on charges of armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently serving a 12-month racing disqualification for a prior offense, was denied bail during his court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia last week.

The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, unlawfully entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs, as reported by Racenet.com. The offense of robbery carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, which can escalate to a life term in cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or personal violence.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19.

The 31-year-old Tarrant, who achieved 502 wins, including three Group race victories, last competed in August. His notable triumph was in 2015 when he won the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

In 2020, Tarrant was suspended for six months after confessing to headbutting another jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry probing the alleged tampering of health assessment forms for licensing purposes.

The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, which directed Tarrant to respond; however, no plea was entered despite repeated invitations over four weeks. The Commission panel emphasized the importance of full cooperation in inquiries to maintain the integrity of the system and public trust in wagering.

The stewards concluded that a 12-month disqualification was justified, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026.
