A man has been sentenced to over eight years in prison for a vicious and planned attack on his father, whom he met for the first time in jail. Lee Spence, 25, assaulted his father with a blade at HMP Perth, causing a serious wound that required more than 40 stitches. He admitted to attacking his father and attempting to murder him in court.
During the trial, it was revealed that Spence carried out the attack because of alleged past mistreatment of his mother by his father when he was a baby. Despite having no prior relationship, both men were inmates in the same prison wing. The judge described the assault as savage and unprovoked, emphasizing the lack of remorse shown by Spence.
Spence received a sentence of eight years and three months in custody, along with three years of post-release supervision. The court highlighted Spence’s history of criminal behavior and warned him about the consequences of not addressing his offending. Spence’s father was treated at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee following the incident.
In his defense, Spence’s representative acknowledged his client’s troubled upbringing and difficult family background. Despite Spence taking responsibility for his actions early on, the court emphasized the severity of the attack and the need for Spence to address his offending behavior to avoid prolonged incarceration.
