“Strangers’ Act of Kindness Brightens Widow’s Tradition”

A 93-year-old widow, Gwen Whittle, recently recounted a touching moment involving two groups of strangers who embraced her ongoing tradition. Gwen had been married for 71 years to her late husband James, whom she met in 1952 after moving to Liverpool for teaching. The couple’s yearly Boxing Day ritual involved visiting Toby Carvery on Aigburth Road in Liverpool. Despite James’ passing in September, Gwen resolved to uphold this tradition and reserved a table at the restaurant, carrying a photo of them together.

Gwen reminisced about meeting James in 1952 while living in the city, falling in love with him upon his return from Egypt after national service. She fondly recalled their joyful seven decades together, highlighting James’ sense of humor that persisted until the end. Having moved to Hale Village in 1978, the couple had established the Toby Carvery tradition relatively recently.

This particular year marked Gwen’s first Christmas alone, prompting her to bring a photo of her and James to the restaurant for companionship. Despite initial reservations, she decided to enjoy the day as best she could. Inside Toby Carvery on Boxing Day, Gwen found herself seated near two large family tables whose members displayed acts of kindness towards her.

One woman at a neighboring table invited Gwen to join them, though she declined, assuming the teenagers present might not appreciate her presence. Later, when Gwen requested her bill, she discovered that a woman from the other table had already paid for her meal. Overwhelmed by this gesture, Gwen attempted to protest but was met with the woman’s heartfelt explanation that she wanted to spread joy during the holiday season.

Moved by the experience, Gwen shared her story in a letter to the Liverpool Echo, aiming to uplift spirits during challenging times. The unexpected kindness she received made her first Christmas without James more bearable, showcasing the power of generosity in bringing comfort to those in need.
