A golfer from Saskatchewan achieved his first-ever hole-in-one while winning at the National Special Olympics. Taylor Carter, based in Regina, became a member of the Special Olympics team in 2013, although he has been playing golf since the age of four. The unforgettable moment occurred at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club on Friday.
Expressing his feelings, Carter mentioned that the experience still feels surreal to him. He described watching the video of the shot as an emotional moment that almost brings him to tears every time. Ashton Carter, who is Taylor’s nephew and caddy, played a significant role in supporting him during the competition.
During the event’s final stages, they arrived at the 135-yard 16th hole, where Taylor successfully used a nine-iron to achieve the hole-in-one. Witnessing the shot, Ashton immediately knew it was a good one. Taylor’s brother, who was nearby, was the first to acknowledge the incredible feat, leading to a joyous celebration by the family.
The video footage captures a heartfelt embrace between Taylor and his best friend Jason, who had traveled to Medicine Hat to support him. Taylor expressed his gratitude for having his best friend present at such a momentous occasion.
Following the hole-in-one, Taylor received a notification on his phone due to a spike in his heart rate, mistaking it for a medical emergency. Despite the excitement, Taylor and his nephew managed to refocus and finish the competition strongly.
By the end of the three-day tournament, Taylor secured a total score of 162 over three rounds, winning the gold medal in his division by a margin of two strokes. Reflecting on the experience, Ashton emphasized the positive impact of witnessing the athletes’ confidence and authenticity on his own confidence, expressing his willingness to caddy for his uncle again in the future.
Taylor proudly wears his medal and acknowledges the support of everyone who contributed to his success. While considering future competitions, he plans to focus on practicing and celebrating with his loved ones for the time being.
