A power outage lasting four days at Western University in London, Ontario has resulted in the destruction of invaluable research samples, disruption of experiments, and raised concerns among biology students and faculty about the safeguarding of millions of dollars in scientific research assets.
The Biological & Geological Sciences Building, Materials Sciences Addition, Chemistry Building, and Natural Sciences Centre have been running on backup power since Friday due to an issue at a campus power substation.
Although power was restored to most buildings on Friday evening, the four affected buildings are still reliant on backup power as repair work continues. Access to these buildings has been restricted as a precautionary measure, with the university working closely with students, faculty, and staff to address their concerns and ensure research needs are met.
This recent outage marks the fifth significant disruption to biology research facilities since August 2025, causing frustration among the academic community. Beth MacDougall-Shackleton, a biology professor, expressed concerns about Western University’s reputation, highlighting the challenges faced in maintaining stable conditions for living organisms and sensitive research materials.
The outages have led to overheating in growth chambers, thawing of research samples in freezers, and difficulties accessing animals used in studies. The department has incurred financial losses from replacing reagents and research materials, but the true impact lies in the loss of irreplaceable research samples accumulated over years.
Graduate students, who have invested significant time in breeding insects and cultivating bacterial strains, are facing setbacks that could prolong their research timelines. Matheus Sanita Lima, a fifth-year PhD candidate, emphasized the irrecoverable nature of the lost samples, including materials from extinct species and long-standing cohort studies.
Calls for action have been made by students and faculty to address the recurring power outages, with demands for improved communication during crises and investments in upgrading the campus electrical infrastructure. The disruptions not only pose reputational risks for Western University but also threaten research funding, potentially impacting the institution’s standing with regulatory bodies.
