Protests Escalate After Fatal Shooting at US Immigration Rally

All attention has been on the United States this week following the tragic death of Alex Pretti during a protest against federal immigration measures. The 37-year-old intensive care nurse was fatally shot by multiple federal agents while being restrained.

His passing has ignited further unrest nationwide, particularly in Minneapolis where the incident took place. This is not the first fatality involving agents from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in recent times. Back on January 7, Renée Good also fell victim to gunfire by an immigration officer, with the incident captured on video and shared globally.

There have been reports of travelers encountering challenges at the border as well. In March 2025, a tourist from Wales, Becky Burke, was held for 19 days at an ICE processing facility during a four-month backpacking expedition across North America.

Becky was detained while attempting to board a flight to Canada after authorities claimed she had breached her ESTA terms by exchanging accommodation for household work with a host family, deemed as unauthorized labor.

Visitors from the UK, even those utilizing the ESTA visa-waiver program, may face heightened scrutiny at the border. Future regulations might mandate travelers to disclose five years of social media usernames and ten years of email addresses to enable security screenings for potential threats.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) projected a $12.5 billion decline in international spending in the USA for 2025. Among 184 countries analyzed, the USA was the sole nation to see a drop in international expenditures last year, impacting its crucial tourism sector.

Despite the decrease in British visitors by 15% in 2025, the UK remains a significant tourism source market for the USA, according to WTTC data.

Looking ahead to 2026, with the World Cup set to take place across North America, starting in Texas, followed by matches in Massachusetts and New Jersey, a surge in fans crossing the Atlantic is anticipated.

Furthermore, 2026 holds significance for US tourism as Route 66 marks its centennial milestone, inspiring grand celebrations along the historic route including car shows and festivals.

Additionally, the 250th anniversary of American Independence will be commemorated with large-scale festivities. While these events are likely to attract domestic tourists, local tourism boards aim to draw international visitors as well.

Would you consider visiting the USA at this time? Are you enticed by the major events in 2026, or does the political climate deter you? And would intensified social media screenings influence your decision to choose alternative destinations over the USA?
