U.S. federal immigration authorities shot and injured a man from the Dominican Republic during his arrest in New York City on Thursday as part of an operation targeted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The man, who is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, was wounded when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fired his weapon during the encounter, according to DHS.
The incident sparked outrage among local residents and city officials, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who condemned the actions of the ICE agents involved. Mayor Mamdani criticized the lack of clear identification of the agents and raised concerns about the safety of individuals in the area, especially a five-year-old child who was present in the vehicle during the shooting but remained unharmed.
Amidst the controversy, Mayor Mamdani engaged in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in an attempt to secure the release of the injured man from federal custody, but the negotiations proved unsuccessful.
According to Homeland Security, the man was described as a “criminal illegal alien” with a prior grand larceny conviction and a history of arrests. The shooting took place in the Marble Hill neighborhood, a small enclave in Manhattan linked to the Bronx.
Eyewitnesses, including Pedro Almaraz and Alfred Silva, expressed their shock and called for greater transparency in the operations of federal officers, emphasizing the need for clearer identification to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Protests erupted at the scene of the shooting, with demonstrators demanding the removal of ICE enforcement from the city and marching to the hospital where the injured man was receiving treatment. The clash between protesters and law enforcement underscored the tension surrounding the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, city officials and residents continue to seek answers and accountability from federal authorities regarding the circumstances of the shooting, emphasizing the importance of transparency in addressing the concerns raised by the community.
