“Canada Races to Build Indigenous Rocket Amid SpaceX Uncertainty”

Canada, as the only G7 nation lacking its own launch capabilities, is striving to establish a Canadian-made rocket. Several Canadian companies are in a race to provide the country with an indigenous pathway to space, especially with concerns emerging that SpaceX might reduce its orbital rides for customers. However, these rocket firms face the challenge of completing a costly endeavor within strict timelines and evolving government priorities, making the journey to space far from straightforward.

Due to Canada’s current inability to launch rockets domestically, customers within the country, both private enterprises and government bodies, rely on external entities to deploy their satellites into orbit. The majority of these launches have been facilitated by American companies, notably SpaceX, which launched all 12 Canadian satellites in 2025, according to industry reports.

These satellites play a crucial role in various sectors such as telecommunications, military operations like threat detection, and earth observation activities like monitoring wildfires. The fear is that without control over its own launches, Canada risks facing potential refusals from foreign entities to launch Canadian technology.

In a bid to address this issue, the Canadian government has identified space as a key sovereign capability and introduced legislation to authorize launches from Canadian soil. Recent funding initiatives have allocated $8.3 million to each of three Canadian companies working on rocket projects, aiming to achieve light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028.

Among these companies is NordSpace, founded in 2022, focused on satellite and space technology development, including building rockets for launch purposes. Another player, Reaction Dynamics, has been engaged in unique engine design work since 2017, with both companies targeting orbital launches by 2028 in alignment with government objectives.

Canada Rocket Company, a new entrant in the market, aims to develop a medium-lift rocket capable of carrying multiple satellites into low Earth orbit simultaneously. With significant private investments and government support, the company has set ambitious goals, including the construction of a $30 million test facility in London, Ontario, to facilitate its space mission by 2032.

The shift in SpaceX’s focus towards its Starship rocket from the Falcon 9 model has raised concerns among satellite customers reliant on the Falcon 9 for launches. This transition presents an opportunity for emerging rocket manufacturers to fill the gap left by SpaceX’s phasedown. The potential reduction in rideshare access due to these changes underscores the importance of fostering Canadian rocket-making capabilities.

Overall, the road to establishing a robust rocket industry in Canada is a challenging but vital long-term endeavor. Private and public funding will be crucial in supporting these ventures to ensure successful and sustainable operations in the space launch sector.
