“Federal Government to Shift Research Activities in Indian Head”

The federal government has announced plans to gradually reduce activities at its research facility located in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, within the next year. The seed increase unit will be relocated to the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre by 2028, with a transitional phase operating from both sites in 2027 to facilitate the shift.

This unit is responsible for reproducing and supplying breeder seeds to licensed growers for multiplication and eventual sale as certified seeds. This decision follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the federal and provincial authorities to preserve the Indian Head and Scott research farms, which were initially slated for closure, along with five other research facilities nationwide.

Under this agreement, the province will take over the management of the land as the federal government phases out its activities. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting the Canadian seed industry, meeting breeder seed demands, and upholding the quality standards for pedigreed seeds.

The future plans for the Indian Head and Scott research farms, particularly in the absence of the seed increase unit, remain uncertain. Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit stated that negotiations are underway with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to determine the fate of the remaining land at these sites as federal operations wind down. Additionally, the provincial government is collaborating with the Saskatchewan agricultural sector to devise a strategy for the utilization of the research farmland.
