Joanna Lumley criticizes the Trump administration for pressuring the UK to lift a ban on importing trophies from hunting. The renowned actress, along with actor Peter Egan, voiced their concerns after Trump’s Interior Secretary, Doug Bergum, wrote to UK’s Environment Secretary, Emma Reynolds, urging a reconsideration of the ban.
Bergum argued that the ban could negatively impact hunting tourism, conservation efforts, and cultural sensitivities in the United States. Trump, whose sons are avid hunters, had previously overturned a ban on trophy imports implemented during Barack Obama’s presidency.
The Mirror has actively campaigned for a ban on trophy hunting imports, a stance also supported by the Labour Government. Despite delays, Defra minister Mary Creagh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the ban last year. However, several trophy hunting Bills failed to pass due to a lack of Parliamentary time, with one being obstructed by pro-hunting peers in the House of Lords.
Dame Joanna emphasized the importance of upholding the ban, stating, “The idea that Britain could be influenced by Trump’s administration to lift the proposed ban on trophy hunting is alarming and distressing.” She urged the government to honor the British public’s clear opposition to the practice.
Peter Egan echoed similar sentiments, expressing shock at the pressure exerted by the Trump administration to abandon a ban strongly supported by the British public. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting’s founder, Eduardo Goncalves, condemned the interference, emphasizing that the UK’s decision on trophy hunting imports should be autonomous.
In a letter to Ms. Reynolds, Bergum suggested that legal, well-regulated trophy hunting is essential for wildlife conservation and local economies. He encouraged the UK to engage in dialogue rather than enforce a blanket ban on imports.
The interaction between Baroness Hayman and the US embassy regarding the matter highlights the ongoing discussions surrounding the ban on trophy hunting imports. The pushback from various organizations and individuals underscores the importance of upholding conservation efforts and public sentiment on this issue.
