Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Kill 11, Spark Wildfires

In southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals over the weekend, as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest attack since a fragile ceasefire agreement was established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, notwithstanding ongoing attacks.

Residents and emergency responders in the region have accused Israeli forces of deliberately igniting wildfires that have been devastating homes, forests, and olive groves in the conflicted area. These actions have raised concerns among the local population about their ability to remain in the area and the prospects for the hundreds of thousands of individuals displaced by the conflict to return.

Will Christou, a journalist for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been covering the wildfires and the broader Israeli military activities in southern Lebanon.

A previous version of this report incorrectly stated that a memorandum of understanding involving the United States, Israel, and Iran was signed in June 2026. Israel was not part of that agreement, and this error has been rectified.
