Earlier this summer, Jasmin Esquivel traveled from Saskatchewan to British Columbia, not knowing that her life was on the verge of a significant change. Shortly thereafter, Esquivel was named Mrs. Canada Universe 2026 at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey, B.C.
Reflecting on her unexpected win, Esquivel expressed her surprise, especially considering her role as a mother to five children. She shared with CBC Saskatchewan, “I didn’t expect it, after many years, after having five kids. I realize that one day your dream is going to come true.”
At 43 years old, Esquivel seized the opportunity to participate in the pageant, reigniting a passion that she felt during her teenage years when she last competed. She described the experience as a nostalgic journey, stating, “I think it’s a memory, like it’s in my blood.”
Residing in Prince Albert, Sask., with her children, Esquivel credited her family for their unwavering support and inspiration throughout her pageant journey, despite her initial hesitations about entering the competition. Her eldest daughter, Brianna Balajonda, remarked, “We were shocked at first. But then looking at her through preparing and training, it really amazed us and inspired us too.”
Esquivel emphasized the pivotal role her children played in her success, serving as both her motivation and steadfast companions behind the scenes of the pageant. Engaging with her community through volunteer work and organizing events, Esquivel and her family immersed themselves in activities that contributed positively to their surroundings.
Her ultimate goal is to empower women and mothers to pursue their dreams, regardless of their familial responsibilities. She encouraged others by saying, “There’s always a perfect time for you. So after having this crown and this title, I just realized that you can still continue your dreams. Having kids doesn’t mean we will stop.”
Looking ahead, Esquivel is set to represent Canada and her hometown in Sri Lanka at the Mrs. Universe 2026 pageant in October. Her children eagerly anticipate supporting her on this new stage, expressing their love and unwavering encouragement.
