Only one individual remains in the race for the Green Party of Canada leadership position following Nira Dookeran’s withdrawal from the competition. Mike Morrice, a former Member of Parliament from Kitchener, Ont., is now the sole candidate.
Dookeran cited personal and family reasons for her decision to step back from the race after careful consideration. She conveyed her well wishes to Morrice and acknowledged the wealth of talent, experience, and dedication within the party.
The Green Party of Canada expressed gratitude to Dookeran for her candidacy and the effort she devoted to the leadership race. Morrice, in response, expressed appreciation towards Dookeran and emphasized the continuation of their campaign to expand the party’s reach and address pressing issues such as climate change and economic inequality.
The official five-month leadership race for the Green Party of Canada was initiated on June 11. Current party leader, Elizabeth May, announced her intention to resign in the summer of 2025, with plans to step down in November of the same year. May, the sole Green Member of Parliament, assumed leadership in 2006, succeeded by Annamie Paul in 2020. May later returned as co-leader alongside Jonathan Pedneault in 2022 until Pedneault’s resignation in 2025.
Dookeran, a former provincial Green candidate and dedicated volunteer for the Ontario Green Party, withdrew from the leadership race. Morrice, a one-term MP for Kitchener Centre, lost his seat in the April 2025 federal election but was appointed deputy leader of the federal Greens on Nov. 28, 2025.
The next steps in the leadership race remain uncertain, with the party promising to provide updates as they become available. Voting for the new leader is set to take place from Nov. 2 to 13, with the announcement of results expected on Nov. 14.
