“Family Chat Campaign Empowers Parents for Kids’ Online Safety”

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide their 11-year-old son with a phone as he prepares to start secondary school in September. Recognizing the importance of managing and ensuring the safety of his access to technology, the couple emphasized the need for open communication within the family.

The couple acknowledged the concerns surrounding children’s exposure to inappropriate content and potential mental health issues related to smartphone use. They stressed the significance of parents engaging in conversations with their children to empower them in navigating the digital landscape.

As families across the country grapple with the challenges and benefits of children owning smartphones, an ongoing campaign called The Family Chat, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, aims to encourage discussions about online device usage at every stage of a child’s development.

Giovanna expressed her appreciation for the campaign, highlighting the value of gaining knowledge and resources to support their family. She emphasized the pressure parents face in having all the answers but found Tesco Mobile’s tools and online hub to be invaluable in addressing online safety concerns.

The Fletchers, who also have two younger sons aged seven and nine, have equipped their children with tablets for communication purposes, allowing them to connect with family members and play games online. When their eldest son transitioned to high school, they provided him with a restricted smartphone linked to his father’s device to ensure controlled access.

Promoting an open dialogue with their children, the Fletchers emphasized the importance of explaining the reasoning behind setting restrictions on device usage. They also highlighted the need for parents to model healthy technology habits by limiting phone use during family time.

Giovanna underscored the gradual approach to granting children internet access, emphasizing the importance of readiness and ongoing communication. She also recognized the need for adults to be mindful of their own screen time habits to set a positive example for their children.

To help children stay safe online, experts recommend setting up child accounts, ensuring accurate age information, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining open conversations about online activities and smartphone usage. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to protect children from potential online risks.
