Lindsey Vonn recently discussed the challenging road to recovery following a serious injury during the Winter Olympics. Despite sustaining an ACL injury and enduring a dramatic fall during downhill skiing in Italy, Vonn managed to reach the starting line but was later airlifted to the hospital.
Facing multiple surgeries for compartment syndrome and a broken ankle, Vonn credits Dr. Tom Hackett for saving her leg from amputation by performing a procedure to relieve pressure. The 41-year-old athlete now confronts a lengthy physical rehabilitation and acknowledges the mental hurdles she must overcome.
Expressing her struggles, Vonn shared, “Today marked the beginning of my mental battle, alongside the ongoing physical challenges. Each injury has taught me valuable lessons, shaping me into a stronger individual. The mental fight can be daunting, but I am determined to persevere.”
Currently in the United States after an extended hospital stay due to complications, Vonn revealed, “I required a blood transfusion due to low haemoglobin levels from surgeries. While I am currently wheelchair-bound with a broken ankle, I am focused on starting rehabilitation and taking each step forward gradually.”
Vonn remains optimistic about her recovery journey, emphasizing a step-by-step approach to regain her strength and return to peak performance.
