Britain is prepared to assist its allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military actions, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to strengthen measures against Russia’s clandestine fleet, consisting of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to avoid Western sanctions. Emphasizing the need for more decisive action against these covert vessels, Cooper highlighted their role in channeling funds to the Kremlin for the conflict in Ukraine and for disrupting vital undersea cables.
While British forces collaborated with the US in a recent operation to seize a tanker linked to Russia for violating oil sanctions in Venezuela, no British personnel have yet been deployed on these ships. Nonetheless, officials are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military intervention.
During a visit to Helsinki, Cooper boarded a patrol ship and engaged with Finnish Border Guard members responsible for defending against Russian threats along Finland’s extensive border. The Turva patrol vessel was notably involved in intercepting a Russia-associated ship accused of tampering with critical undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.
Cooper expressed concerns over the presence of Russian shadow fleet vessels in British waters, highlighting their adverse impact on sanctions, the conflict in Ukraine, environmental issues, and national security, particularly concerning undersea cables. She affirmed the readiness of British forces to conduct enforcement operations while advocating for stronger collaborative efforts with international partners to counter the shadow fleet.
Advocating for a complete prohibition on Russian oil shipments to cut off a crucial revenue source for Moscow, Cooper underscored the UK’s close monitoring of enforcement actions taken by European allies against illicit vessels, including operations in the Baltic Sea and near the French coastline.
The visit also included a firsthand demonstration of how Finnish Border Guards conduct vessel seizures, with armed personnel rappelling from helicopters to board ships. The successful raid on the Fitburg vessel last month, coupled with crew arrests, is seen as a potent deterrent, showcasing Finland’s ability to use military force against rogue vessels when necessary.
Recent escalations in Russian maritime activities near the UK have raised concerns, with Defence Secretary John Healey issuing warnings following incidents involving a Russian spy ship and shadow fleet vessels. Cooper reiterated the UK’s determination to tighten control over the Russian shadow fleet and Putin’s operations to safeguard national security interests within UK waters.
Additionally, Cooper engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb during her regional tour to the Arctic Circle, focusing on heightened security concerns in the High North region. The attention to Arctic security has intensified amid US President Donald Trump’s expressed intentions to annex Greenland to counter potential Russian or Chinese influence in the region.
