“Edmonton Marathon Director Apologizes for Course Error”

Two days post the completion of the Edmonton Marathon, the race director issues an apology following the revelation of an error in accounting for detours resulting in the race courses being longer than expected. This acknowledgment validates the suspicions of many runners.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Edmonton Marathon race director Tom Keogh disclosed that the half-marathon and marathon courses were measured to be 674.7 meters longer than initially believed. Keogh expressed regret for the oversight, attributing it to a miscalculation in the detour-related course adjustments.

Keogh took full responsibility for the error, emphasizing that a thorough review revealed discrepancies in the course calculations due to detours. Despite previous assurances of course accuracy, both elite and amateur runners had raised concerns about the distances before the official acknowledgment.

The Edmonton Marathon, recognized as a qualifier for prestigious running events such as the Boston Marathon, is collaborating with Athletics Canada and other stakeholders to address the implications of the error on this year’s results. The revised information has left participants like Calgary runner Mitch Walz, who aimed to qualify for the Boston Marathon, feeling disappointed after realizing their achievements might have been impacted.

Looking ahead, Keogh assured participants that steps would be taken to prevent similar errors in the future. The Boston Athletic Association clarified that while adjusted results may not be accepted if distances were off or participants strayed off course, athletes who still met the qualifying standards would be considered for the marathon.

The incident underscores the significance of accurate course measurements in maintaining the integrity of competitive running events and ensuring fair outcomes for all participants.
