“Canadian Researchers Honored in Global Ecology Photo Contest”

Two Canadian researchers have been honored in a global image competition that showcases ecological research through photography. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition recognized 11 photos from researchers worldwide at different career stages. These images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural landscapes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick, won the competition’s research in action category with his photo “Intertidal education.” The image captures Brennan supervising undergraduate students during a fish monitoring project in St. Andrews, N.B., showcasing their curiosity and dedication under the moonlit sky.

Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, claimed the “protecting our planet” category with his photo “A bridge between past and present.” This composition of 33 drone photos of Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River offers a unique perspective on the transformed ecosystem, illustrating the impact of human activities on natural environments.

Photographers believe that these images play a crucial role in fostering public trust and understanding of environmental conservation efforts. They serve as a visual narrative of scientific research, creating a connection between the scientific community and the broader public. Through these captivating images, researchers aim to communicate the importance of ecological studies and promote conservation awareness.

The winning photos from the BMC image competition capture diverse ecological themes, ranging from wetland predators to freshwater ecosystems, emphasizing the intricate relationship between humans and nature. These images not only showcase the beauty of ecosystems but also highlight the need to protect and preserve our natural environment for future generations.
