“Canadian coach urges strict penalties for Man City financial violations”

Canadian men’s soccer coach Jesse Marsch has urged for strict penalties to be imposed on Manchester City due to violations of Premier League financial regulations. Marsch, who previously managed Leeds United, stated his belief that there were inconsistencies in the club’s operations based on his experience competing against them in England. City was found to have breached financial rules over a nine-season period, allegedly inflating revenue through “sham” commercial contracts, resulting in more than £900 million in understated costs.

Manchester City has refuted the allegations, contending that the verdict contained legal and factual errors, and has lodged an appeal against the ruling by an independent commission. Marsch highlighted the financial contrast between Leeds and City during the 2022 summer transfer window, where both clubs reported profits but with differing financial circumstances. He expressed skepticism over City’s acquisition of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £52 million, suggesting there were discrepancies in the reported figures.

The American coach also emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “This is football,” in response to the perceived inconsistencies in the sport. Reuters has reached out to Manchester City for their response to Marsch’s comments. The appeal process will involve a private hearing before an independent three-member board, with potential penalties including fines, points deductions, and even relegation or title revocation. The timeline for any sanctions being enforced is uncertain pending the outcome of the appeal.
