Mack Keay, the Chief Operating Officer of Ocean Trailer, mentioned that the added 25% cost is higher than their profit margin on a trailer, necessitating them to pass on the increase to customers. This move is in response to the federal government’s announcement of dollar-for-dollar countermeasures on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods, in retaliation against the recent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.
Industry players like Ocean Trailer and the Manitoba Trucking Association are expressing concerns over the impact of these counter-tariffs. The majority of semi-trailers in Canada are sourced from the U.S., and businesses are rushing to import goods before the tariffs take effect. The shortage of domestic manufacturing capabilities in Canada could exacerbate the situation, as the country’s two semi-trailer manufacturers may not meet the increased demand post-tariffs. The average cost of trailers, currently at around $75,000, could surge closer to $95,000 with a 25% tariff, affecting the entire industry.
