“Buck Martinez Inducted into Blue Jays’ Hall of Excellence”

Former Toronto Blue Jays player, manager, and broadcaster John Albert Martinez, known as Buck Martinez, who battled cancer, was honored by the team as he was inducted into the Blue Jays’ Hall of Excellence during the club’s 50th season festivities. The new Hall of Excellence, located behind right field at Rogers Centre, celebrated outstanding contributors to the franchise, including Martinez and 10 other former honorees from the Level of Excellence.

Martinez, 77, received recognition before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners. He expressed his surprise and gratitude for the honor, highlighting the impact of the moment on him. Martinez, who retired from his broadcasting role last winter, also shared a touching encounter with a Blue Jays fan who expressed appreciation for his contributions to the team.

During the ceremony, Martinez reminisced about his experiences connecting with fans across Canada, emphasizing the pride and loyalty shown by Blue Jays supporters from various regions. He joined a prestigious group of Hall of Excellence inductees, including Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay, among others.

The Level of Excellence, where the honorees’ names are displayed, will be relocated within the stadium bowl for improved visibility to fans in the upcoming seasons. The Blue Jays aim to uphold the legacy of honoring key figures who have influenced the team’s history, aiming to bridge generations of fans with the people who shaped the organization.

Martinez, a former catcher and manager for the Blue Jays, had a successful broadcasting career that spanned over four decades, covering thousands of Blue Jays games. His dedication to the sport was recognized with the Jack Graney Award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.
