“Avengers: Endgame” Reclaims Title as Highest-Grossing Film

Marvel’s blockbuster film “Avengers: Endgame” reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing movie worldwide this past weekend. The film, with a total gross of $2.9255 billion US, narrowly surpassed James Cameron’s “Avatar,” which had previously held the top spot with $2.9237 billion US.

This achievement for “Endgame” came after a recent re-release in theaters, marking the second time it has outperformed “Avatar” at the box office. The revised version of the superhero ensemble movie, featuring four additional minutes, debuted with a global box office revenue of $86 million US ($26 million US domestically), according to parent company Disney.

The re-release of “Endgame” served as a lead-in to the upcoming installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Avengers: Doomsday,” slated for release on December 18. The film aims to re-engage audiences following underwhelming performances of recent MCU films such as “Thunderbolts” and “Captain America: Brave New World.”

In the realm of re-releases, only “Star Wars: A New Hope” in 1997 and “The Lion King” in 2011 have surpassed the domestic opening of “Endgame.” The record-breaking success of “Endgame” in 2019 solidified its position by overtaking “Avatar” shortly after its initial release.

James Cameron, the director of “Avatar,” held the highest-grossing film record since 1998 with “Titanic.” However, in 2019, “Endgame” broke Cameron’s streak, prompting him to graciously acknowledge Marvel’s achievement.

Despite “Endgame” briefly losing its top position to “Avatar” again in 2021 following a re-release in China, the filmmakers extended congratulations to Cameron. The industry witnessed an unpredictable turn of events at the box office, with a blend of successful and disappointing releases in recent times.

While Hollywood experienced a record-breaking summer with significant domestic ticket sales, some high-profile films like “Disclosure Day” and “The End of Oak Street” failed to resonate with audiences. Conversely, unconventional genre films like “Obsession,” “Resident Evil,” and “Backrooms” have garnered strong viewer interest, indicating a shift towards unique and unexpected storytelling over established franchise offerings.
