A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The report highlights that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.
The study indicates that issues with internet connections are widespread, with frequent dropouts being the primary complaint. Customers also expressed frustration over slow download speeds and service outages.
An astonishing 91% of broadband users reported experiencing issues with their internet service in the past year, showing that only a small fraction of households had trouble-free connections.
Among the leading providers, Sky ranked poorly for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers encountering this problem. Virgin Media also performed inadequately, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying high bills.
Sky users were dissatisfied with the broadband speed, with nearly one in three finding it insufficient. Other providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for their reliability. Plusnet stood out among larger providers for surpassing competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
Which? consistently finds that smaller broadband firms excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to major providers in the UK.
The consumer advocate recommends households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Ofcom’s broadband checker can help users identify available networks.
In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson emphasized the company’s ongoing investments to enhance services, citing positive feedback from official data and independent rankings.
Good-quality broadband is essential, and consumers now have the opportunity to choose from competitive deals and switch to providers that offer better service.
