“UK Urged to Prepare for Copper Phone Network Replacement”

As the UK’s communication network undergoes a significant upgrade, households are urged to prepare for the upcoming transition. By January 2027, the country’s traditional copper phone network will be permanently replaced by Digital Voice, a new service utilizing broadband connections for calls instead of the century-old copper wiring.

Failure to switch to Digital Voice could result in the discontinuation of existing landline services. A recent campaign named ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ led by Clare Balding, emphasizes the importance of checking landlines to ensure readiness for the digital shift.

The migration towards Digital Voice is gaining momentum, with BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, issuing “stop sell” notices at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This action restricts broadband providers like BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet from selling or transitioning customers to outdated copper-based services in those areas.

Openreach’s “Stop Sell” initiative is activated when 75% of premises in an exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre, prompting customers to adopt new digital services over the upgraded Full Fibre network. With 1,572 exchanges now under Stop Sell rules, approximately 15.4 million homes and businesses in the UK are affected.

While the shift to full fibre and Digital Voice may appear daunting, it promises enhanced benefits such as faster broadband speeds, more reliable connections, and a modernized phone service tailored for the digital era. Individuals uncertain about their status can utilize the Openreach postcode checker to verify available services.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, underscores the importance of the Stop Sell program in facilitating the UK’s transition to advanced full fibre technology. Phasing out legacy copper services in areas with widespread fibre availability ensures smoother migration to faster, more dependable digital infrastructure. This strategic approach streamlines network maintenance, supports industry-wide migration, and paves the way for the imminent switch-off of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network in six months. Transitioning to a digital phone line will be imperative for all users by then.
