Residents in St. Catharines, Ont., were relieved when Ontario Premier Doug Ford personally informed them that plans for an emergency shelter in their neighborhood were being scrapped. The decision came after concerns were raised about a proposed shelter site on Bunting Road. The region had been looking for a new shelter location as the lease for their current temporary shelter was set to expire.
Local residents, including Cathy Link, had expressed worries about the potential negative impact the shelter could have on the community. They cited concerns such as vandalism, garbage, and drug-related issues in nearby Douglas Park, a popular area for families and children. Link had contacted Ford to voice these concerns, and to her surprise, he not only responded but also called her directly to confirm that the lease negotiations for the Bunting Road site had been terminated.
The region, however, is still searching for an alternative site by the end of the year. Officials emphasized the importance of shelter services in supporting those experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Finding a suitable location that meets the needs of both clients and the community has proven to be a challenge.
City staff have explored numerous potential sites in St. Catharines but have yet to find one that meets all the necessary criteria. The region remains committed to securing a suitable shelter site and will continue working with local partners to ensure a safe and housing-focused facility.
Coun. Jackie Lindal had encouraged residents to reach out to Ford regarding their concerns about the proposed shelter location. She believed that the site was not ideal due to its distance from essential support services in the downtown area. Residents, like Link, expressed gratitude towards Ford for his responsiveness and decision to halt the lease negotiations, relieving the neighborhood from what they had feared was a “done deal.”
