A 15-year-old boy was rescued by a fishing vessel in Alaska’s frigid Bering Sea after spending days clinging to a capsized skiff. Tragically, the boy’s brother and cousin did not survive the ordeal. The rescue took place near St. Lawrence Island, a remote Alaskan island closer to Russia than the U.S. mainland.
The boy’s remarkable endurance impressed the captain of The Northwest Explorer fishing boat, who described him as “one tough kid.” The Coast Guard initiated a search after the family reported the trio missing, with the boy being spotted by an air crew on Monday morning.
Upon reaching the skiff, the fishing boat crew successfully rescued the boy, who was showing signs of hypothermia. The crew provided warmth and care to the boy before he revealed that his brother was still trapped under the skiff, and his cousin had passed away the previous night.
The incident began when the group departed St. Lawrence Island on Friday, intending to return on Sunday. The Coast Guard, along with The Northwest Explorer, collaborated in the rescue operation, highlighting the importance of swift and efficient response in such critical situations.
