“McFly’s Giovanna Fletcher Advocates Safe Online Use”

As their 11-year-old son prepares to start secondary school in September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a mobile phone. The couple understood the importance of having discussions among themselves and with their son before introducing the device.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed her concerns about the vast content accessible on smartphones and emphasized the necessity of managing and ensuring the safety of children’s online activities. She highlighted the prevalence of inappropriate content exposure and mental health issues among children, emphasizing the significance of empowering parents to engage in conversations with their children.

Many children received smartphones as Christmas gifts, leading families to navigate the challenges and benefits associated with this technology. Over the upcoming year, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, will promote discussions within families about online device usage, regardless of their children’s ages.

Giovanna mentioned her enthusiasm for participating in the campaign, as it provides valuable knowledge that benefits their family. She emphasized the pressure parents often feel to have all the answers but praised Tesco Mobile’s resources and online platform for easing the process.

The Fletchers, including McFly frontman and children’s author Tom, 40, have two other sons aged seven and nine who use tablets to communicate with family members and play games online. Ensuring communication channels remain open, especially when parents are away for work, is a priority for the family.

When their eldest son transitioned to high school, they provided him with a restricted smartphone to maintain contact. The device lacks internet access and is linked to Tom’s phone, ensuring controlled usage. Open dialogue and explanation of the restrictions are vital components of their approach.

Giovanna highlighted the importance of adults also managing their screen time and setting boundaries, such as no phones in the bedroom or during mealtimes. She emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children to align with their readiness.

In addition to these measures, the importance of setting up a child account, ensuring correct age settings, activating safety filters, using parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online safety were emphasized as key steps to safeguard children online. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, stressed the critical nature of prioritizing safe device setup, especially in the initial excitement of receiving a new phone.
