In a touching tribute, young survivors of the recent tragic fire incident in Switzerland delivered heartfelt speeches at an official memorial event, moving French President Emmanuel Macron to tears.
Marie Albrecht, Aline Morisoli, and Solal Heimendinger, who were all witnesses to the disaster, shared their experiences on stage during the ceremony at the “Le RĂ©gent” convention center in Martigny, Switzerland, attended by about 1,000 individuals, including families of the deceased, first responders, and dignitaries.
The memorial service was part of a nationwide day of mourning following the tragic fire at Le Constellation bar in the Crans-Montana ski resort, which claimed the lives of 40 people, including 20 children, and left 116 others injured. Among the victims were teenagers as young as 14 and siblings in their teenage years.
Expressing her emotions, Marie Albrecht stated, “Speaking here today is deeply moving for us. What started as a simple visit to the bar turned into a horrific nightmare. The sights we witnessed were unbearable.
“The chaos outside was beyond nightmarish, with agonizing screams piercing the icy air and the overwhelming stench of burning filling the surroundings.”
Aline Morisoli reflected on the challenges faced by their generation, emphasizing resilience and the pursuit of a better world. She remarked, “Despite the hardships we endure in this fragile and often unjust world, we persevere. We strive for our ideals.
“There is much to mend, much to build – we envision a different reality. Witness the determination of the youth. We stand proud of your efforts. Keep fighting.”
“Every individual engaged in the struggle matters, seen or unseen. Every action contributes. Do not succumb to defeat. Embrace life fully. While we cannot add days to life, we can certainly add more life to days.”
Solal Heimendinger, another survivor, expressed gratitude toward the emergency personnel and medical staff, recognizing their dedication. Approximately 40 firefighters and rescue workers were honored with a poignant minute’s applause during the event. Despite snowy conditions, hundreds of spectators gathered at Place du Scandia in Crans-Montana to watch a live broadcast of the service. A moment of silence was observed nationwide in memory of the victims, accompanied by church bells tolling for five minutes across Switzerland.
During his address to the attendees, State Council President Mathias Reynard expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the fire incident. He stated, “Today, we gather to honor the 40 souls we lost. Let us pledge never to forget them. Silence is not enough; words must now be spoken. We stand by you, mothers, fathers, siblings, friends.”
Mr. Reynard extended apologies to the victims and the injured, promising a thorough investigation as the minimum response. He affirmed, “Together, we will progress towards a brighter future.”
