Although Whelan doesn’t recall the specific conversation described by Parton, she vividly remembers meeting the country music legend in 1972, a year before “Jolene” was recorded. At the age of 10, Whelan attended one of Parton’s concerts during a family trip to Disneyland and approached her for an autograph, drawn by her admiration for Parton’s song “Coat of Many Colors.”
Years later, after watching a TV movie about Parton’s life in 2015, Whelan conducted research that led her to the interview where Parton recounted meeting the young girl named Jolene. Struck by the similarities between her appearance and the description given by Parton, Whelan began to connect the dots and realized she might be the Jolene in question, especially considering how frequently her name was mistaken for Jolene.
