Tragically Hip’s Final Concert Anniversary Sparks Emotional Reflection

A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final concert in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with it. The guitarist reflected on the milestone during an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National.” Langlois expressed gratitude for the band’s impact on people and the legacy they left behind.

The emotional farewell show took place at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, where lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to a packed audience and millions watching nationwide. Fans shared tears with Downie as he performed iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the final time.

Formed in 1984, The Tragically Hip released 13 studio albums before embarking on their last tour in 2016, culminating in the hometown show on August 20, 2016. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, sadly led to his passing a year later at the age of 53.

To mark the 10th anniversary, CBC will rebroadcast the band’s final concert. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from fans and emphasized the significance of remembering their journey rather than celebrating it.

Langlois recalled feeling uneasy before the last performance but found solace when Downie’s positivity lifted his spirits during the soundcheck. Baker highlighted his role in supporting Downie’s wish for a heartfelt connection with the audience, despite the emotional challenges he faced.

Initially concerned about Downie’s health impacting the tour, the band witnessed his physical improvement throughout the farewell performances. Reflecting on the unexpected magnitude of their final show, Langlois acknowledged the post-event realization of its profound impact on fans across the country.

While the band has no plans for a reunion, they recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from the farewell tour. Baker emphasized the healing power of music, sharing a personal anecdote about the emotional release music provided during a period of grief.

In conclusion, The Tragically Hip’s farewell concert continues to resonate with fans as they honor the band’s legacy and the enduring impact of their music.
