“Gaza City Mourns, Lays to Rest Victims of 2023 Airstrike”

In Gaza City, remnants of an Israeli airstrike from three years ago were solemnly marked by over 100 orange stretchers draped in Palestinian flags on Tuesday morning. Among the flags were smaller ones symbolizing children, with photos and flower petals adorning some of the makeshift shrouds. These remains, now reduced to bones, teeth, and shreds of clothing, belonged to 112 individuals from the Abu Sharia and Hasayna families who perished in the attack on their neighborhood on November 23, 2023.

At a funeral held on Tuesday, hundreds of people, including surviving family members, gathered to pay their respects as the deceased were laid to rest at a nearby cemetery. The families have been searching for their loved ones in collaboration with Gaza’s Civil Defence, a process hindered by the lack of heavy machinery in the area.

The slow excavation process was evident as Youssef Abu Sharia, who lost several family members in the strike, watched an excavator painstakingly sift through debris looking for human remains. Damage to heavy machinery in Gaza, coupled with Israeli restrictions on equipment entry, has impeded efforts to locate and retrieve bodies.

The funeral provided closure for the grieving families after years of waiting and uncertainty. However, the ongoing struggle to excavate bodies buried under the rubble persists, with thousands still unaccounted for in Gaza. Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basal emphasized the urgent need for international intervention to facilitate the entry of essential equipment into the region.

The emotional ceremony culminated in a procession to the cemetery, where the remains were finally laid to rest, bringing a sense of closure to the Abu Sharia and Hasayneh families. Yet, amidst the mourning, the families couldn’t help but ponder the fate of those still missing, questioning where their loved ones might be.
