British military personnel are being relocated from a US facility in Qatar in response to threats made by Donald Trump towards Iran. Trump’s warnings regarding Iran’s handling of anti-government protests have escalated tensions, with the US beginning to withdraw some staff from the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the area.
The decision to evacuate personnel, as confirmed by a US official speaking anonymously, is considered a precautionary measure without elaborating on specific details.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard commander, Mohammad Pakpour, has vowed a forceful retaliation for the deaths of Iranian individuals, accusing the US and Israel of orchestrating the protests and labeling them as the main perpetrators of the casualties. Pakpour emphasized that these countries will face consequences at an appropriate time.
In response to the situation, Sir Keir Starmer announced that the UK government is collaborating with allies to impose further sanctions on the Iranian regime, denouncing the violent suppression and killings of protesters in Iran. The recent crackdown in Iran has reportedly resulted in the deaths of numerous demonstrators opposing the regime.
Furthermore, there have been declarations of new sanctions against the Iranian regime, with the Iranian ambassador being summoned by the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper highlighted the UK’s existing sanctions on crucial sectors in Iran and hinted at additional measures to address the escalating nuclear situation, working closely with the EU and other partners.
Regarding the evacuation of British military personnel, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson refrained from providing detailed information due to operational security concerns, emphasizing the priority on ensuring the safety of personnel, including the withdrawal of personnel when necessary. The Mirror has reached out to the MOD for further comment.
