A woman recently shared her harrowing experience of staying in a Chinese ‘fat prison’ for 28 days, where strict rules and regulations govern the inmates’ lives. TL Huang, an Australian expat, was confined in a weight loss facility in Guangzhou, China, where unhealthy foods like instant noodles were prohibited. The living conditions were harsh, with detainees packed into dormitories behind high walls, gates, and electric fences. Security personnel monitored entry and exit points 24/7, restricting anyone from leaving without valid reasons.
According to Ms. Huang, life in the institution was highly regimented and controlled, with daily weigh-ins, rigorous exercise sessions, and strictly regulated meals. She entered the camp on her mother’s advice after gaining weight from eating takeout food. However, her time there took a toll on her health, as she fell ill with flu and a high fever three weeks into the program, leading to hospitalization.
In response to the growing issue of obesity in China, where more than half of the adult population is considered overweight or obese, these ‘fat prisons’ have been established to help residents manage their weight. Individuals voluntarily check themselves into these programs, paying fees to cover accommodation, food, and exercise routines. Ms. Huang, for instance, paid $600 for her stay, which included meals like prawns with vegetables and braised chicken.
Despite the challenges she faced, Ms. Huang acknowledged the positive impact of her time in the camp, where she lost 6kg in four weeks. She shared that the experience helped her establish better habits and routines, emphasizing the importance of the journey towards improved health. In her view, participating in such programs can serve as a valuable first step towards achieving long-term health goals and building a healthier lifestyle.
