The adult child of a British couple detained in Iran expressed concerns about their well-being following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran amidst significant anti-regime protests.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were traveling around the world on a motorcycle, were arrested by Iranian authorities in January 2025 on accusations of espionage. Despite denying these charges, the couple remains incarcerated in a daunting Iranian prison. Their son, Joe Bennett, stated that his parents are in a precarious situation due to the widespread protests in the country, resulting in numerous arrests, violence, and executions.
Joe mentioned that Iranian prisons were experiencing overcrowding due to the high volume of arrests during the protests. He recently spoke with his parents, who described the jail conditions as unsafe and frightening.
The temporary shutdown of the UK embassy in Tehran added to Joe’s worries about advocating for his parents’ release. The government indicated that the embassy would operate remotely following its closure, affecting consular services.
If Craig and Lindsay were to be released, their intended plan to seek refuge at the British embassy has been disrupted by its closure. Legal representatives in Tehran have submitted a bail application on their behalf.
Joe expressed uncertainty about his parents’ next steps without the embassy as a safe haven. Officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office are reportedly assessing the situation.
In a previous interview with The Mirror, Joe detailed the harsh conditions his parents faced at Evin Prison, including lack of ventilation causing health issues and limited exercise opportunities. Craig’s health deteriorated significantly, experiencing weight loss and dental problems, while both struggled with inadequate nutrition and medical care.
