“UK Braces for Storm Goretti: Red Weather Warning Issued”

A red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for Storm Goretti, urging people to stay indoors. Storm Goretti, described as a “multi-hazard event,” is currently affecting the UK, bringing the potential for up to 30cm of snow and wind gusts reaching 100mph. Weather alerts are in effect nationwide, with a red warning now in place for the South West, specifically covering Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from 4pm to midnight today. The Met Office forecasts exceptionally strong winds, with “violent gusts” lasting up to three hours.

According to the Met Office, Storm Goretti will result in powerful northwesterly winds in the Isles of Scilly and parts of Cornwall, with peak gusts of 80-100 mph in exposed areas. Wind speeds are expected to escalate quickly, with violent gusts persisting for 2-3 hours before easing. The broader yellow warning remains in effect until Friday morning, with the added risk of large waves causing hazardous conditions along coastal areas.

Individuals are advised to remain indoors if possible and secure any loose items that could pose a danger. The warning emphasizes the importance of avoiding road travel during adverse weather conditions to prevent injury or property damage. The public is urged to check and secure outdoor items such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences. Weather warnings have been issued for snow, wind, rain, and ice nationwide, leading to potential disruptions and unsafe travel conditions.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong highlights the diverse impacts of Storm Goretti, including significant snowfall in parts of Wales and the Midlands and intense winds in the far South West. He stresses the need for residents in warning areas to stay informed about the forecast and follow guidance from local authorities to stay safe during this severe weather event.
