U.S. President Donald Trump recently underwent a covert military operation while traveling from Turkey to Britain due to an alleged threat from Iran. The operation involved Trump switching planes mid-flight using a catering truck, a tactic aimed at evading potential dangers.
Initially, the White House had announced that Trump was flying on Air Force One from Turkey after attending a NATO summit. However, immediately after boarding Air Force One, Trump secretly exited the plane via the catering truck and boarded another aircraft bound for Britain, as reported by the Washington Post, citing undisclosed sources.
Confirming the incident, Trump explained that the Secret Service and military recommended the plane switch due to a security threat, which he claimed did not intimidate him. Trump emphasized that he was unaware of the specifics of the threat but acknowledged the routine nature of receiving numerous threats.
During his return from an event in Ohio, Trump shared that he had little say in the decision to switch planes and emphasized that the security professionals made the call. He assured reporters that the situation did not alarm him personally and downplayed the risk posed to the individuals who remained on the original plane, including White House officials, security personnel, support staff, and journalists.
The decision to switch planes raised security concerns, especially since Trump had flown to Ankara for the NATO summit on a newly refurbished aircraft donated by Qatar. Trump’s impromptu choice to switch to an older Air Force One for the return journey sparked queries about the security arrangements for the newer aircraft.
The new plane’s swift upgrades had previously sparked discussions about its cost and security features, coinciding with heightened tensions with Iran, which shares a border with Turkey. Before departing Ankara, Trump announced his decision to use the older Air Force One for the return leg to Britain, while the new aircraft made a stop at RAF Mildenhall for U.S. service members to tour it.
Journalists accompanying Trump were misled into believing they were on board the older Air Force One, which served as a decoy during the operation. They were instructed to keep their window shades closed during the flight, a precaution that raised suspicions and questions among the press corps.
Trump later justified the closed window shades as a safety measure, hinting at potential risks during the flight. He reassured the journalists by asserting that if he faced any danger, they would be equally exposed to it.
