A new monument named Thunderhead has been unveiled in Ottawa, symbolizing a thundercloud breaking a cylindrical shell to reveal thousands of sparkling mirrors inside. For Wayne Davis and other individuals who were dismissed from the military, RCMP, and civil service in Canada due to their sexual orientation between the Cold War era and the 1990s, this monument sheds light on the discrimination faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in Canadian history.
Davis, a 79-year-old from Vancouver, expressed appreciation for the visibility of the monument and believes it will serve as a reminder of the past injustices. He recounted a moment when he openly admitted his sexuality to his RCMP supervisor after being questioned about his presence in a gay bar, leading to his dismissal from the force in 1985 despite his successful career progression.
Davis was not alone in his experience. An estimated 9,000 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians were subjected to similar treatment, with the rationale being that their sexuality could be exploited by Soviet operatives. Many victims, including Sgt. Robert David Van Norman, faced shame and stigma, causing rifts within families and leading to financial struggles and emotional turmoil.
Elenore Sturko, Van Norman’s great niece and an Independent MLA, shared how her uncle, a respected RCMP officer, was forced to resign in 1964 after being seen in a gay establishment. The repercussions of the purge extended beyond the individual, affecting families and communities.
Davis and Sturko, both survivors of the purge, attended the unveiling of the Thunderhead monument in Ottawa, funded in part by settlement money from a class-action lawsuit against the government. The monument serves as a symbol of remembrance and renewal, acknowledging the past injustices while honoring the resilience of those who endured them.
