“Storm Goretti to Bring Strong Winds and Snow, Amber Alerts Issued”

Storm Goretti is expected to bring very strong winds and snow on Thursday, potentially causing significant disruptions and posing a “danger to life”.

The Met Office has issued an amber alert for high winds for tomorrow. Initially affecting the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall, where wind gusts could reach 80-90 mph, another amber alert covers central England and Wales, with the possibility of up to 30cm of snow. This alert will be in place until Friday morning.

The Met Office warns of potential flying debris, which could cause harm in the south-west. Damage to buildings and power outages are likely, impacting mobile phone coverage. Travel disruptions are anticipated across various modes of transportation including roads, railways, air, and ferry services, with closures expected for some roads and bridges.

Coastal areas are at risk from large waves, potentially leading to material being thrown onto roads and properties. Residents are urged to be cautious and stay updated on the situation.

Although Storm Goretti’s strongest winds are forecasted over northern France, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will also experience its effects.

It is advised to stay indoors during the storm. If going outside, avoid areas close to buildings and trees. Secure loose objects in gardens before the high winds hit, including bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

For those who must travel, precautions such as driving slowly, giving space to other road users, and having a winter kit in vehicles are recommended. Stay updated on travel information, prepare vehicles, and allow extra time for winter conditions.

The arrival of Storm Goretti coincides with a prolonged Arctic cold snap in the UK, causing heavy snowfall. Avalanche warnings have been issued in six areas of Scotland, and a major incident was declared in Aberdeenshire. Met Office alerts for snow and ice cover most of the UK, with warnings of travel disruptions across road, rail, and air services.
