Consignaction, the organization overseeing Quebec’s bottle deposit program, is implementing changes due to overwhelming lineups at its depots. One notable location, Jean-Proulx Consignaction+ near Ottawa, has faced challenges despite extended operating hours. While Quebec and Ontario have different container deposit systems, only Quebec allows refunds on certain items like soft drink containers and juice and milk jugs.
To address the issue, a new “express return” option will be mandated for Ontario residents. This method will involve dropping off unsorted containers at designated sites for processing and receiving refunds through the Consignaction app approximately a week later. This approach aims to streamline operations, allowing for proper sorting of containers to ensure eligibility for refunds in Quebec.
Consignaction is considering implementing additional verification measures to confirm the origin of containers purchased in Quebec. Additionally, the organization is introducing seven new bulk return locations in Gatineau, with specific addresses provided for four of the sites. These new locations aim to accommodate larger volumes of empty containers, as most existing return locations within Gatineau stores can only handle smaller quantities.
