The best time to observe the Perseid meteor shower is around midnight Eastern Daylight Time, with the potential to see up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions. While actual visibility may vary, viewers can expect to witness several bright meteors during the early evening hours.
The Perseid shower began on July 17, gradually intensifying as it approaches its peak on August 12-13. Meteor enthusiasts are encouraged to check the weather forecast and consider observing on the nights leading up to the peak for optimal viewing conditions.
To maximize meteor sightings, viewers should seek a dark location, avoid using phones to preserve night vision, and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for enhanced visibility. The radiant point of the Perseid meteors lies in the Perseus constellation, though meteors can be spotted across the entire sky.
In addition to the Perseids, two other major meteor showers – the southern delta Aquariids and the alpha Capricornids – are active, offering increased chances of witnessing shooting stars. As a bonus astronomical event, a partial solar eclipse will occur on August 12, visible in select regions such as Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small part of Portugal. While Canada won’t experience a total eclipse, viewers across the country can witness a partial eclipse where the moon partially covers the sun.
