Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton has expressed his desire to see Africa regain control of its resources by breaking free from the dominance of countries like Britain, France, and Spain. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, also hopes for the return of Formula 1 racing to Africa before he retires.
During a pre-Australian Grand Prix interview as the 2026 season kicks off in Melbourne, Hamilton was asked about the possibility of hosting a race in Africa by a South African journalist. He seized the opportunity to advocate for the continent’s autonomy and lamented the ongoing exploitation of its riches.
Describing Africa as the most beautiful part of the world, Hamilton emphasized the importance of reclaiming it from colonial powers. He urged African nations to unite and take back control of their resources for the continent’s future prosperity.
Expressing his enthusiasm for racing in Africa, Hamilton highlighted the absence of a Grand Prix on the continent since 1993 when the South African Grand Prix was held at Kyalami. He emphasized the need for Formula 1 to include Africa on its calendar, citing his positive experiences in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa as ideal racing destinations.
Hamilton, who is pushing for an African Grand Prix before retiring, disclosed his efforts to persuade Formula 1 decision-makers to make it happen soon. He expressed his pride in his African heritage, mentioning his roots in countries like Togo and Benin, and his eagerness to race on the continent.
