“Judy Parfitt, 90, Shares Filming Insights for ‘Call the Midwife'”

Renowned actress Judy Parfitt, known for her role as Sister Monica Joan in the BBC’s period drama “Call the Midwife,” has shared insights into filming new scenes at the age of 90 as the series gears up for a hiatus. Sister Monica Joan, a beloved character in Nonnatus House and the broader Poplar community for her eccentric nature, fondness for cake, and compassionate advice, has been portrayed by Parfitt since the show’s debut in 2012.

Despite facing family disapproval for her choice to become a nun, Sister Monica Joan found solace and purpose among her fellow nuns and nurses at Nonnatus House. The upcoming season of “Call the Midwife,” set to premiere on January 11, delves into the challenges of 1971, exploring themes such as the Women’s Liberation movement, premature births, cancer diagnoses, and more.

Looking ahead, a 16th series of the show has been confirmed as it ventures into the 1970s. Additionally, a prequel focusing on the early days of Nonnatus House during World War II is in the pipeline, along with a spin-off film set in 1972. Parfitt, reflecting on her recent work on the series post her 90th birthday celebration, mentioned the demanding nature of her role, both due to the complex storylines and her personal acting style.

Expressing her joy in playing a nun character, Parfitt explained her affinity for Sister Monica Joan’s unique personality and speech patterns, which she found challenging yet fulfilling to embody. The recent festive special of “Call the Midwife” saw Sister Monica Joan staying back in London to support the essential services amid a crisis at the order’s Hong Kong outpost.
