The Italian soccer federation has joined other nations in withdrawing its backing for FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The FIGC announced on Wednesday that it will no longer support Infantino’s reelection bid in March due to concerns about his recent actions related to governance and international competitions.
Infantino faced mounting pressure to resign following his now-abandoned proposal to sell shares in the World Cup to private equity investors. Three continental confederations accused him of deceit, and UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA events.
FIGC President Giovanni Malagò stated that they will collaborate with UEFA and other European federations to promote a soccer model based on merit, solidarity, sustainability, and fan engagement. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, listening, and shared responsibility in maintaining soccer’s growth and fundamental principles.
Several soccer federations, including those of England, Wales, and Ireland, as well as Norway and five Nordic countries, have also withdrawn their support or expressed lack of confidence in Infantino’s leadership.
Despite the backlash, Infantino was previously expected to be reelected unopposed next year in Morocco. However, some FIFA member federations, such as Morocco, Qatar, and Lebanon, have expressed support for him.
UEFA is anticipated to formally retract its boycott threat against FIFA competitions following assurances that Infantino’s controversial World Cup sell-off plan will not be revived. This decision will enable European teams to participate in upcoming tournaments free from the shadow of the proposed commercial arrangement.
The fallout from Infantino’s proposal, which involved a multi-billion-dollar venture with private investors, prompted widespread criticism and ultimately led to its abandonment. UEFA and other confederations opposed the plan, resulting in a significant backlash against Infantino.
In response to UEFA’s demand for guarantees, the proposed spinoff company, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, will not be reintroduced in a modified form. UEFA had previously expressed a lack of confidence in Infantino’s leadership and hinted at efforts to prevent his reelection next year.
