A man in Pennsylvania, identified as Jonathan Gerlach, has been arrested on over 500 charges related to the alleged theft and desecration of human remains from the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, near Philadelphia. The disturbing discovery included more than 100 skulls, mummified hands and feet, decomposing torsos, and various skeletal parts, described by authorities as resembling a scene from a horror movie.
Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse stated that the remains were found in Gerlach’s basement and a separate storage unit. The investigation revealed that some of the remains belonged to children, including infants just a few months old when they died. Detectives are working to identify the origins and number of the recovered bones, with some estimated to be hundreds of years old.
Authorities reported that Gerlach allegedly targeted the 160-acre graveyard where approximately 150,000 individuals have been laid to rest. Jewelry believed to be linked to the cemetery was also recovered, along with a body carrying a pacemaker. Gerlach, who was apprehended carrying a crowbar near his vehicle, is facing charges such as theft, receiving stolen property, abuse of a corpse, desecration of a historic burial place, and desecration of a public monument.
Rouse expressed sympathy for those affected by the disturbing events, especially families trying to determine if their loved ones were among the collected remains. The arrest followed an investigation initiated around Halloween, after multiple mausoleums and vaults at the cemetery were found to have been forcibly opened.
The case continues to develop as authorities piece together the extent of the alleged crimes and the identities of the remains involved.
