“Former Little League Star Makes MLB Debut with Giants”

Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson earned his nickname during his Little League days due to his lack of speed on the bases. Fast forward twelve years, Tugboat is now making his Major League Baseball pitching debut with the San Francisco Giants. He was called up from the team’s triple-A farm club and is set to start as the Giants’ pitcher against the Cleveland Guardians.

Jeff Duda, who coached Wilkinson in Alberta, received the exciting news directly from him in a late-night phone call, where Wilkinson expressed his astonishment and enthusiasm about being called up to the big leagues.

Wilkinson’s pitching talent was evident early on when he led White Rock to the 2015 Canadian Little League title at the age of 12. He made a mark at the Little League World Series by striking out 16 batters in Canada’s opening game. Recently, he showcased his skills at the World Baseball Classic, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out renowned hitters like Cal Raleigh and Bryce Harper.

Despite not having the typical physique of a major league pitcher at 6-1 and 250 pounds, Wilkinson’s determination and competitive spirit set him apart. His former coach praised his work ethic and drive to constantly improve, highlighting his exceptional makeup and commitment to fitness.

Drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2023, Wilkinson was traded to the Giants in May. In his 20 minor league starts this season, he has recorded 96 strikeouts in 90 innings with a 3.40 ERA, showcasing his pitching prowess.

In Canada, fans are eagerly anticipating Wilkinson’s debut in the big leagues and are excited to see him excel at the highest level. Jordan Broatch, the director of baseball operations and player development at the White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association, commended Wilkinson’s talent and personality, noting his consistent dominance on the mound throughout his career.

Duda expressed his belief in Wilkinson’s potential to reach the major leagues and praised him for seizing the opportunity to showcase his skills and achieve his dream.
