A flight attendant had to handle a challenging situation mid-flight as a malfunction caused human waste to overflow in the plane’s toilet. The crew member was captured in a YouTube video using a drinks carton to remove the excrement and dispose of it in the sink.
During a trip from California to Manila on a Boeing 777, the incident occurred. To avoid diverting the aircraft to Guam, which was six hours away, airline officials decided it was best to manually clear the waste after a technical assessment.
The intervention was successful, and the final flight report confirmed that the lavatory function returned to normal, allowing the plane to land in Manila without further issues.
The airline representatives mentioned that despite the inconvenience caused to passengers and crew, they appreciated their patience. Philippine Airlines acknowledged the professionalism of the crew in handling the situation according to procedures with passenger welfare as a priority.
Although staff members were upset about the incident, passengers were spared a diversion or a full toilet overflow. Flight attendants reported the incident to their union, accusing Philippine Airlines of prioritizing profits and punctuality over worker safety and dignity.
An internal investigation is ongoing to gather facts, and the airline spokesperson refrained from commenting on specific claims until the investigation is complete.
