Finnish Border Guard Conducts High-Stakes Naval Drill

Observing from the deck of a Finnish patrol ship, I witnessed armed individuals descending from a helicopter and launching an assault on the vessel.

The masked security personnel swiftly moved to seize control of the ship’s bridge, vociferously commanding the situation. This was, however, only a practice drill conducted by the Finnish Border Guard, responsible for safeguarding an 830-mile border along NATO’s eastern frontier against Russia. The unit actively engages with suspected vessels damaging crucial undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland, known to be part of Putin’s clandestine naval operations.

Demonstrating their procedure for seizing a suspected vessel, camouflaged personnel showcased their tactics to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper during her recent visit to Finland and Norway. The proximity to Russia felt palpable as we boarded the Turva, an offshore patrol ship stationed in Helsinki overlooking the Gulf of Finland, extending toward St Petersburg, the easternmost point of the Baltic Sea.

Geopolitically close to Russia, Finland faces challenges from Putin’s disruptive strategies and hybrid warfare tactics. Cooper’s visit underscores the menace posed to Britain by the Russian covert fleet.

During our conversation, Cooper emphasized the imperative of taking decisive action against the network of aging oil tankers operating under dubious flags. These vessels not only circumvent Western sanctions to support Russia’s unlawful activities in Ukraine but are also suspected of sabotaging essential undersea cables vital for telecommunications and energy transmission, including electricity, oil, and gas.

The UK is reportedly exploring legal avenues to authorize military intervention to board such vessels, following its recent involvement in assisting US special forces in a high-profile operation targeting a tanker linked to Russia. As tensions escalate in the Arctic region, the visit by the Foreign Secretary assumes greater significance.

The shifting dynamics in the Arctic, driven by climate change-induced warming seas opening new maritime routes and exposing resources due to melting ice, have sparked geopolitical rivalries. The proposal by President Trump to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, has heightened global concern over Arctic security.

With the aim of asserting its role in enhancing High North security in partnership with NATO allies, Britain seeks to demonstrate its strategic influence. However, the potential actions of the US President could disrupt these collaborative efforts.
