Father of Three Dies After 15-Hour Hospital Wait

A 28-year-old father of three tragically passed away just days before Christmas following a 15-hour wait for medical attention. Dylan Jones, diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, experienced severe side pain at work on December 10. After calling emergency services, it took two hours for an ambulance to reach him.

Jones was then brought to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary’s A&E department, where he endured a 13-hour wait on a trolley in a corridor for an MRI scan. During this time, his spleen ruptured, leading to emergency surgery to address internal bleeding. Unfortunately, Jones succumbed to his condition on December 20.

While the official cause of death included liver failure, spleen rupture, and a congenital condition called Jeune Syndrome, Jones’ family believes the prolonged wait at the hospital contributed to his passing. His cousin, Billielea Porter, expressed that by the time medical intervention occurred, it was too late for Jones to recover fully.

The family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for Jones’ young children. Jackie Baillie, representing Scottish Labour Health, condemned the situation as “heartbreaking” and a “scandal,” emphasizing the repercussions of healthcare system shortcomings.

NHS Lothian’s Medical Director, Tracey Gillies, offered condolences and acknowledged the extended wait experienced by Jones, clarifying that he received multiple intensive care interventions for his severe illness. The Scottish Ambulance Service expressed sympathy to Jones’ family and highlighted their willingness to engage with the family to address any concerns.

Cirrhosis of the liver, a condition affecting around 60,000 individuals in the UK, can lead to severe complications, such as malnutrition, sepsis, and blood clots. Despite the potential for long-term management, liver cirrhosis poses significant risks to individuals’ health and well-being.
